We woke up around 7:45 am and had a nice breakfast of cereal with lactose free milk. Our first task of the day was preparing squash beds. We weeded the area, raked the wood chips to the side, put a thick layer of compost down, used a broadfork to break up the soil further in the ground, used a hoe to mix the compost and soil together, then we evened it out before shoveling small holes. We put the squash in the holes and covered them with more dirt. We prepared a bed for the cucumbers using the same steps, but didn’t plant them yet because Seth wanted them to grow more before being exposed to bugs and other dangers. If they were able to get bigger before being put in the ground, they would have a better chance of withstanding pests and therefore surviving. The other thing we did today was planting flowers!! We planted 2 rows of Asters. Seth has a whole bed of flowers he cuts and takes to market. They’re located right next to the kitchen window so he has a nice view. Day 2 dinner was a bit rough…rice and undercooked chicken :(
Fun fact of the day: annual plants die in winter and need to be replanted each year. To save seeds, plants usually have to grow past their “eating” period so that they flower. Perennial plants can live for several years!
Bonus fact: A broadfork is a tool that stabs several feet deep into the dirt and does a wonderful job breaking up the top layer of soil when flicked back up through the soil
Marley's silly solo task of the day: whittling a crochet hook! (see her face of focus below :)
